iOS app icon generator

Turn your logo into an iOS app icon Apple accepts: 1024 × 1024, opaque, square corners, ready for Xcode, plus your website's favicons. Free, nothing uploaded.

What does this generator make?

One zip with everything an iOS app and its website need:

  • AppIcon.png, 1024 × 1024 pixels, for Xcode and the App Store. It's saved without an alpha channel, so every pixel is opaque, the way Apple asks for the main icon.
  • AppIcon-dark.png, if you tick the dark version: your logo on a transparent background.
  • Contents.json, so the AppIcon.appiconset folder drops straight into your asset catalog.
  • Website icons: a favicon.ico with 16, 32 and 48 pixel sizes, apple-touch-icon.png at 180 × 180, and 192 and 512 pixel PNGs for a web app manifest.
  • A README with the lines to paste into your site's head.

Why is there only one size for the app?

Because Xcode makes the rest. Apple's Xcode documentation says an iOS app can generate every icon size from one 1024 × 1024 image, and that's the default for a new project. Many icon generators still export 20 or more files sized for old versions of Xcode. You don't need them.

How do I add the icon in Xcode?

  1. Open your project, then Assets, then AppIcon.
  2. Drag AppIcon.png into the iOS image well. Or, in Finder, swap the AppIcon.appiconset folder inside Assets.xcassets for the one in the zip.
  3. Build and upload. App Store Connect takes the icon from your build, so a new icon needs a new version.

How much padding should the logo have?

Usually a fair amount. iOS rounds the corners itself, so the edges of the square get cut, and Apple asks for square artwork with a background that fills it. Keep the important part near the middle.

The generator starts the logo at 60% of the width. That's our starting point, not an Apple rule. A 500 × 500 logo at 60% becomes a 614 × 614 mark in the middle of the 1024 × 1024 square, with 205 pixels of background on each side. If your file is already a finished square icon, slide it to 100%.

What about dark and tinted icons?

People can switch their Home Screen to dark or tinted icons, and iOS makes those versions from your icon if you don't provide them.

If you want your own dark icon, tick the box. Apple asks for it with a transparent background, so the system's dark background shows through, and that's what the generator saves: your logo alone. It works best with a light or colourful logo. Apple asks for a tinted icon as a greyscale image, which this tool doesn't make, so iOS makes that one for you.

What sizes are the website icons?

  • favicon.ico holds 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions. Google asks for a square favicon and recommends one larger than 48 × 48.
  • apple-touch-icon.png is 180 × 180, the size in Apple's example for iPhones. It's the icon people see when they add your site to their Home Screen.
  • icon-192.png and icon-512.png are the two sizes web.dev lists for a web app manifest.

What can't this tool do?

  • Liquid Glass layers. Icon Composer makes layered icons that iOS lights and blurs. A browser can't make that file. Apple says a flat image still works.
  • Mac icons. Apple's Xcode docs say a Mac app needs an image for every size, or an Icon Composer file. This tool makes the iOS icon.
  • The design. It puts your logo on a background. It doesn't redraw your logo or judge whether it reads at small sizes. The Home Screen preview shows the small sizes, so look there.
  • Android icons. Not included.

Common questions

Is this app icon generator free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no watermark. It runs in your browser, so your logo is never uploaded, and the zip is made on your device.

What size should an iOS app icon be?

1024 × 1024 pixels, square. Xcode makes every smaller size from that one image, which is the default for a new iOS project.

Does an iOS app icon need a background?

Yes. Apple asks for an opaque background that fills the whole square. The generator puts your logo on the colour or gradient you pick and saves the file without an alpha channel.

Can I make a Mac app icon with it?

Not a full Mac set. Apple says a Mac app needs an image for every size, or a layered Icon Composer file. This tool makes the iOS icon and your website's icons.

Do I need dark and tinted icons?

No. If you leave them out, iOS makes its own from your icon. You can add a dark version here: your logo on a transparent background, which is how Apple asks for it.
