How does an app get listed?
- A maker submits it. Makers pay a one-time listing fee, and a person reviews every submission before it goes live. If an app is not approved, the fee is refunded in full.
- We add it ourselves. Some listings are apps we chose to add, free, so the directory is worth browsing from day one. A few carry an “Editor’s pick” label: a recommendation we give sparingly, and it can’t be bought.
Paying buys a review and, if the app is approved, a listing. It doesn’t buy approval, kinder wording, or a place on a comparison page.
What is paid, and how is it labelled?
- Daily and Weekly Spotlight are paid places on the homepage: up to three apps for a day, or one app at the top for a week. Both are labelled Sponsored, on the site and in the newsletter.
- The homepage’s Fresh picks take turns through the whole catalogue every few hours. That can’t be bought.
- App Store links on listings a maker paid for are marked as sponsored links for search engines.
- If we ever list an app we have a stake in, the listing will say so.
Prices and what each plan includes are on the pricing page.
Where do a listing’s facts come from?
Each listing says who its facts came from. From the maker means the maker answered our questions about price, accounts, offline use and ads. From our editors means we read the App Store page and other public sources. It doesn’t mean we tested the app on a device.
Anything nobody has told us stays marked as not specified.
What are comparison pages?
Pages such as “Focus and plan your day” are shortlists, not rankings. Each app is there for a different job, and a page is only published once at least 3 real apps fit it.
What do the numbers measure?
We count clicks from our pages to the App Store. A click is not a download, and we never present it as one.
