What is the App Store app name limit?
30 characters, and at least two. App Store Connect Help says the name must be at least two characters and no more than 30, and App Review Guideline 2.3.7 repeats the 30-character limit in its own words.
The name is counted in characters. Only the keyword field is counted in bytes.
Can you change your app name without an update?
No. The name changes when you submit a new version. Promotional text is the one field you can change at any time.
What does Apple say a good app name looks like?
Its product page guide asks for a name that is simple, memorable, easy to spell and hints at what the app does. Be distinctive, and avoid generic terms or names too close to existing apps.
Guideline 2.3.7 adds what to leave out: trademarked terms, popular app names, prices and other irrelevant phrases added only to game the system.
How long are real indie app names?
We read the App Store names of the 30 apps listed on Launch Indie Apps on October 19, 2026.
- Most use nearly all of it. The median name is 27 characters. 16 of 30 are 27 or longer, and 3 of 30 use all 30.
- Most pair a brand with what the app does. 25 of 30 follow the pattern "Brand: what it does", 21 with a colon and 4 with a hyphen, as in "Habit Tracker - HabitKit".
- A few are only a brand. The shortest is 7 characters.
Do the words in your name help search?
Yes. Apple says search results are based partly on matches for your title, subtitle, keywords and category, and that your app is searchable by app name and company name. That's why most makers put what the app does next to the brand. It's also why you shouldn't repeat those words in the keyword field: the keyword checker finds them for you.
